A Little History |
The Union Bar is a local institution situated on Main Street in Gering Nebraska, a small town with a population of about 9,000 residents in the western panhandle of the “Husker State”. Gering is the county seat for Scotts Bluff County and is located just south of the North Platte River and the City of Scottsbluff, a regional shopping hub in the high plains of the mid west. The building is a two story brick structure built in the early 1900s and served this farming community for years as the First National Bank and Trust Company until the early 1940s when it was converted to a bar. While it remains unclear as to the exact time the bar was opened or who the original bar owner was, the establishment was operated for more than forty years by the Hoffman family. The building suffered from deferred maintenance for decades until the new owners completely refurbished and restored the property in the year 2000.
“The Union” is a gathering place for local residents and a meeting place for those who have left the community and return for anniversaries, class reunions, and community special events such as Oregon Trail Days held in mid July every year. The Gering Civic Center is right across the street from the Union Bar with facilities to accommodate more than one thousand people and a 500-space parking lot.
“The Union” is a small Irish style pub with an occupancy capacity of only 70 persons. In the summer months and in a good weathered spring and fall the patio is open in the late afternoons and evenings. The patio, “Western Union”, can be reserved for special occasions at no charge. (Capacity 60) Those wishing to do so may contact our manager Ms. RaNae Mares at (308) 436-7741.
In season, the Huskers football games are always on TV. A Huskers game party is held every Saturday, televised or not! Every Friday night some sort of hour’s devoirs is served free of charge and drink specials are a daily practice. |
